Time and Frost

Nathan Calresh

The vampire stepped through the forest, moonlight shining brightly on his milk-pale face, contrasting with his raven-black hair. When he reached the forest clearing, he saw her letter instantly, along with the delicate flower attached to it, a blossom he had never seen before, perhaps blooming only during the day.

These were Yllaria's words and affection, Nathan realized.

If only she knew who the real danger is.

It had been a while since he had last feasted, and the vampire felt cold, almost shivering. He could feel his body rebelling, and his skin turning brittle like marble, as if it might break.

The vampire took the flower and placed it on his palm. To his shock, the blossom frosted, then froze and became stiff. Within an instant, the delicate ice sculpture shattered into fine dust.

"Fuck."

This fragility symbolized something deeper, the vampire realized. The night had responded.

Not knowing how else to preserve this moment, he bit into his palm and let some of the shattered flower touch his blood.

Nathan nodded, feeling the cold sensation with relief. He knew she would handle everything she needed to, including finding the panther.

Then he whispered quietly into the night, only for the owls to witness.

"We will meet again, little falcon. But time is an illusion of the living."

Realizing it was indeed time to dine, he hurried off.
