The Falcon's Melody

Nathan Calresh

Nathan stood under a tree close to the travel mage in Trinsic, awaiting her to materialize. Yllaria, the woodelf. It was night, as it always was, when the vampire was out, and the moon shone bright onto his milky-pale skin. Briefly, his eyes lost their coldness and warmed with a golden glow when she appeared.

But then, as he drew closer, Nathan noticed her skin seemed a shade less green, her hair a touch less red, and her composure slightly strained. For a split-second, this sparked a predatory hunger in him, his eyes cold as the night in winter, the way a snow leopard longs for prey within reach.

The urge to steal her blood for himself. But that would mean losing it all, and more, so he spoke with sincerity.

"Has the melody of the night forced your hand, little falcon? I would not hold it against you if you left."

Her energy flowed nonetheless, and she was in good spirits once they were outside of the city, in the safety of her natural environment, the forest. Her glow restored, and her vibrant hair color returned.

The vampire breathed out. Not out of necessity, but out of practice.

"I am not human", she said, reminding him of what was obvious yet easy to forget.

That makes two of us.

A profound truth, and perhaps an answer to what was to come. The forest held her own secrets, the vampire realized, and perhaps more than he would like to know. His eyes looked far into the darkness between the treelines, into the darkness where many secrets dwelled.

Perhaps I am the prey. Her trust is more than I can muster.

Yet painfully, he realized, his very presence might have pushed things into motion that could not be undone.

"Fly, little falcon, else I fear we force each other's tragic hands."

Yet she did not budge; she only smiled.
