Snakes and Attention

Ruchi Vael'kyn

Ruchi, the slender dark elf, sat lazily in her chair of carved obsidian and dark wood, tilted backward with her bare legs crisscrossed on her table. Any schoolteacher would have scolded such laissez-faire behavior. It wasn't elegant, but it was comfortable. And she wasn't in school anymore.

Rest is the favorite word of the mystics.

In front of her lay a book, but the text was so dense the priestess could grasp only a paragraph at a time.

She stood and began to wander about the room.

I should boil some more tea.

But she was already wired to the teeth, the drow realized, staring down at her twitching pinky finger.

Her eyes wandered to the picture of the silver snake. The cold gaze of the reptile pierced her consciousness, stirring thoughts of Zynrae. A soft sigh escaped her thin throat.

Ruchi picked up a rare, citrusy surface fruit-chewy, dense, and sharply sour enough to shock her back to full alertness. A pity no other drow were around to watch her consume such an expensive luxury. It would have been a fine way to stir up some healthy jealousy.

Her thoughts drifted back to Zynrae and her studies. She had worried about her meddling with the shadows.

To observe is better than to react. Reacting engages.

Yet the high priestess knew the faern possessed formidable magic and, above all, a razor-sharp wit. She would make it. At least, Ruchi hoped so. A crease formed across her forehead.

You better.
