Whispers Behind the Curtain
Nathan Calresh
The vampire rested on his bed, away from the harmful sunlight, behind closed curtains and beneath a layer of stone and earth in a cellar in the ancient woods. Her blood was still on his lips, carrying the scent of moss and ancient bark. Nathan's repeating crossbow, made of ancient wood, decorated with unholy etchings, hung on the wall. It had been used for hundreds of battles, yet it was strung and shining as if forged only yesterday. Truly, the weapon had been blessed. Or cursed, depending on which side was being pointed. The youngest of the vampires had come to save his... life. Nathan pondered this for a moment, then glanced into her green eyes. But it was I who drew you behind the curtain of life. Oh, forgive me, daughter of the forest. "I dreamed of a bat flying through the night wind, first cautiously, then furiously," the vampire spoke. Although his voice sounded alien to him, it helped him remember who he was. "It was me, Nathan." Yllaria held his gaze. Then, he remembered it had been he who had turned her toward the secrets of the night, and his eyes became heavy with the guilt of centuries. Yet it was here, in this moment, that he felt the promise of the secrets she was learning, and that she was going to be able to use them for good. "The chain, Yllaria. We must deliver the fragment of the Balor's chain to Lord Dent." "Ai, Nathan, that is what must be done now." "Thank you, Yllaria. You have done more than I deserve."
